The John Nicholas Trailhead is located on Black Road and is accessible from Skyline Boulevard (Highway 35) or Highway 17. It has roadside parking in several turnouts along Black Road and access for the John Nicholas Trail. A porta potty is located a short distance from the trailhead beyond the service gate. There is no water at the trailhead. The trail is open to hikers, bikers and equestrians and features a 1.9 mile, fairly flat, service road section from Black Road to the Lake Ranch Reservoir. From the reservoir, the trail ascends 3.3 miles uphill on a 4-foot-wide single track that winds through dense forest with some areas of scenic viewing. The trail connects to Sunnyvale Mountain trailhead and to the south end of the Skyline Trail, which parallels Skyline Boulevard. The John Nicholas Trail was completed in 2014 and was dedicated as a segment of the Bay Area Ridge Trail. The trail is named in memorial for one of the founders of the Park Management Program at West Valley College, who died in 1998.
